Below is a brief overview of the TTB formula application process:
1. Determine if Formula Approval is Required:
First, check whether your product requires TTB formula approval. This standard can vary depending on the type of product, the ingredients used, and how the product is made.
Although there are some exceptions, the general rule is that flavored products, products with added ingredients (such as certain spices, fruit juices, or compounded flavors), or products that deviate from standard wine, beer, or distilled spirits require approval.

2. Gather Necessary Information:
Collect detailed information about your product, including all ingredients, their sources, and the production process.

3. Create a TTB Formulas Online Account:
Go to the TTB’s Formulas Online website and create an account if you do not already have one. This is the platform where you will submit your formula for approval.
When linking your account to your permit, be sure that you have either TTB Power of Attorney status (TTB f5000.8), or Signing Authority for Corporate Officials (TTB f5100.1) on file with the TTB National Revenue Center or via Permits Online.
4. Prepare and Submit Your Formula Application:
Complete the application form with detailed information about your product. Be thorough and accurate to avoid delays.
Upload any required supporting documents, such as ingredient specifications, flavor ingredient data sheets ("FID"), process flowcharts, and safety data sheets.
5. Submit the Application:
Review your application to ensure all information is correct and complete.
Submit the formula application through the Formulas Online system. You will receive confirmation of your application once submitted.
6. Monitor the Application Status:
After submission, you can track the status of your application through your Formulas Online account.
The TTB reviewer may contact you if additional information or clarification is needed. Respond promptly to any requests to expedite the approval process.

7. Approval and Use:
Once your formula is approved, you will receive a notification from the TTB.
You can then proceed to use the approved formula in the production of your alcoholic beverage, though be sure to obtain TTB Certificate of Label Approval (a “COLA”) before canning or bottling your product, if a COLA is required.
